Howl's moving castle - Improvement meme by Qinni Howl's moving castle - Improvement meme by Qinni
edit: Well, I'm calling it "improvement" because I personally feel like I got better at composition, perspective, and colouring :D

But anyways, i thought i might as well show it, since my second drawing is based off the first one.

Of all the memes I've seen of this, I've always seen the same pose/composition in the before and after, except the rendering is better in the after. However, I feel like improvement doesn't just have to be an improved knowledge of structure; it could also be lighting, composition, posing, etc too. I feel like I understand composition and perspective a lot better now, so that's why the whole pose is different.

Anyways, I'm not saying the other ppl are not right for doing the same composition and posing, I'm just explaining why I didn't do that xD;.

oh, i also got rid of the wings cause I'm no longer in my "DRAW WINGS ON EVERYF*KING THINGGGGGGGGGGGGGG :iconallthethingsplz:" faze. 8D;;

the two drawings:

Improvement, yes, but your 2007 image is already really lovely! Well done. I also love your tutorials... they show how knowledge of anatomy really informs realistic drawing. Thanks!

Improvement memes are so much fun. It's awesome to see how much people improve given time and practice. Both are beautiful pieces, and the second one is definitely an improvement in EVERY aspect, more life, more flight, no cliched wings, just awesome.

The newer one is definitely better - in every way in my opinion.

The perspective and composition has improved greatly he poses are better too for starters.

On top of that the colours are more vibrant, and the background is much more interesting and works better with the characters- in the 2012 version, there's more of a sense of "drifting" and the characters feel like they belong in their background. In the original it feels more like they've just been stuck on the sky, they don't feel as incorporated into the environment.

The flow of the hair and clothes also looks more natural and so do their expressions; the older version was almost more "generic" while the newer version is more emotive and the style is more unique. Basically everything flows together better. I think you've improved a lot; anyone who doesn't must be crazy.

Both of these are very nice! :D

However, I like the new one better--perspective, coloring, pose, the more regal feel... Also...on the old one......he has his hand on her butt and not her waist. >.>; And though your wings were freaking amazing, they don't feel like they belong with the piece; the black ones pushed the characters (the focal point) over to the left side and it threw off viewer perception a bit. The new one is more cohesive and feels less like cut-out characters pasted on a cloudy background (I exaggerate a bit but that's the general feel). The only part I like better in the old one is the way you made the clouds. They're wispy and all different sizes and textures, whereas the new ones are smooth and feel a bit more like lumpy bubbles than clouds. :XD: Apply the color variation in the clouds of the second one to the clouds of the first and there ya go. :D Then again, bubbly clouds are more cartoon-like, if that was what you were going for.

I'm happy to oblige when someone asks for a critique, but it's always up to you to take my opinions or leave them. :)

There is improvement, but the older drawing is good too.... of course, for those who are begginers, if they practiced a lot in a year, it would be easier to notice the improvement, because they would have started from zero. But I agree with you, the newer one is better (If you want my opinion, altough I'm not an artist)

XD whoever said you didn't improve is an old troll interweb surfing in their rocker after refuseing to go to their eye appointment for the third time in the year, in short they have no clue what they're talking about. not only have you improved with poseing but your shadeing has also improved, and the faces look so natural in the newer version, nicely done :) makes me wanna get my ass in gear so i can try and be half this awsome someday.

Your hard work paid off. This upload shows how much you've improved in the last five years.
Looking at the picture on the left I have to say it is not to my taste. I am very peculiar when it comes to drawing styles and coloring.
You were already focusing on where the light would come and did a good job on that but the sleeve of Howl was badly colored. It looks puffy and weird. Now focus on the sleeve of the right Howl and beside the way it was drawn the shadow was perfetly put so that it looks 'empty'.
The way you drew hair was.. too fine. It looked out of place to the whole of the drawing and together with the wings that look like you weren't putting the same amount of time and love as to the rest - to me - it looks like the hair and wings throw the picture out of balance.
The clouds on the right fit better to the picture and it has a great dymanic to it, still, I prefer the clouds you drew 2007. The look more "cloudy". Fluffy and breakable while the right one seem thick and dusty. *shrugs* My opinion. Everyone differs in taste.
To the picture on the right: the sparkles who seem to be stars could also be macig sparks, especially on the left down corner. The perspective is great and I love Sophies feet and shoes. Everything has a nice flow to it, maybe because you include a lot of wind and a feeling of magic in your pictures and are already used to how texture and hair are moving in the wind.
I love Howl's face but Sophie's looks ... kind of shifted?!
The posture of the hands PURE IMPROVEMENT!
I can see how you'll grow in the next five years.

^THIS. I did a different pose when I did this meme, and I think it makes so much more sense to show the improvement on perspective as well.

I say there is vast improvement. You mentioned composition and perspective and I wholeheartedly agree. Both have improved very well. Another thing that I've noticed improvement in is your figures. They look more 3D and full. They look like they have mass whereas before they looked a bit flat. Lastly, I would say that you have a good grasp of color. ^_^ I say /goldstar! You worked hard and it shows! Keep it up!

I like that, in your second version, Sofi doesn't have wings since she never had them in the movie. I have seen so many dark and light angel couples here on deviantart that it is kind of inappropriate to pair it with Hayao's work which I consider very original. Not to say that the original picture degrades Hayao!

Maybe a better way to say this would to reference Rob Paravonian's rant on Pachabel. Lots of songs seem to copy the same basic chord and as a celloist (if i recall that right) Pachabel's tune is one of those things you learn to play early and play again and again. To the point that you notice it's similarities in any song that you hear. Dark and light angel couples are the Pachabel of my viewing experience on deviantart. Everything else in the picture might be wonderful but in the back of my mind I say, "Oh look! Another couple with angel wings!"

tl:dr; Too much winged couples makes deviantart a dull website.

wow i actually see a major improvement, congratulations. Your 2007 picture, though nicely done, doesn't really deal much with perspective, however for your 2012 piece i see you incorporated a complementing perspective that draws the viewers' eyes upward to the characters' faces. This upward pull is repeated by the background's gradual coloring from a light sky blue to midnight blue...it is almost as if they are floating up to space. This also adds to the romantic feel of the piece. Very well done :)
Also in your 2007 piece the coloring is duller in comparison to your 2012 piece and i feel Sophie's wings and dress kind of blend into the background. But in your 2012 piece this is not the case because the colors that you used are vibrant and spellbinding and the characters' clothing do not blend into the background despite their blue clothes, in fact, I found your uses of their original hair colors positively refreshing and it adds a wonderful contrast to the ever-present blue. With that said, if you used any more blue in your 2012 piece i would have felt lost as to what i was looking at but since this was not the case i applaud your artistic genius and encourage you to keep up the beautiful work. This is a fantastic piece!
